What are the benefits of small cannabis plants?
Small growing cannabis plants offer various advantages. Are you curious why growing small cannabis plants is recommended? Then check out the benefits below. Small cannabis plants:
- Need less energy, food and water
- Make sure you can sow more plants per m2
- Generally have a shorter breeding cycle
Cannabis seeds that develop small cannabis plants
If you want to grow weed in a small space or you have another desire to keep a cannabis plant small, the basic principles of a cannabis cultivation deviate somewhat from a regular culture. However, the main idea remains the same: creating the best conditions so your plant grow as good and healthy as possible.
Growing small marijuana plants requires a special approach. Especially with species that have a genetic tendency to grow considerably or when you want to grow weed in a small space. The first step to a small cannabis plant is to choose the right genetics which will create a so called “Small growing marijuana plant”. For this you have various options at Weedseedsexpress. The cannabis seeds in this category develop plants with an average height of no more than 1 meter with a indoor cultivation.
How to grow small weed plants (with big buds)?
Besides choosing the right genetics, you have several options to grow a small sized marijuana plant. With these tips you decide yourself how big or small your cannabis plant will grow. Our tips relate to the:
- Pot size
- Growth and flowering phase
- Air, ventilation and water supply
- Growing techniques
The pot size
Both small growing weed seeds and normal species have a natural aim to create as much volume underground as above the ground. Having said this you can conclude that the pot size has a large influence on the plant its size. If the plant its roots can’t continue to grow underground because the space is limited, it will not happen above the ground.
Growing weed in small pots ensures the limited size of a weed plant. It’s therefore advisable to use a small spot. With the table below you can decide for yourself which pot size you can use to control the plant size in a simple way.
Growing marijuana in small pots
|Pot in liters||Pot in cm|
|0.5||Up to 5 cm|
|2 - 3||Up to 10 cm|
|5||Up to 20 cm|
|10||Up to 40 cm|
|15||Up to 60 cm|
|20||Up to 80 cm|
|25||Up to 100 cm|
|40||Up to 120 cm|
Growth and flowering phase
The cultivation cycle of a cannabis plant consists two phases, namely the growth and flowering phase. When you grow a cannabis plant you always start with a growth phase. The following applies: the plant will remain in the growth phase with 16 hours of light or more. If you want to grow a small cannabis plant, it is therefore important to apply a short pre-growth.
After the growth phase, you can switch to a 12/12 lighting scheme to activate the flowering phase. You can determine this moment yourself. However, keep in mind that the plant will not suddenly stop growing after you activated the flowering phase.
Sativa's are known to grow considerably more than an Indica during the transitional phase from growth to flowering. Sometimes up to 200-300% higher. For Indica's you can expect 50-100% growth after switching to the flowering phase. You can easily anticipate to this by adjusting the light regime when a sativa has reached about half of the desired height. For an Indica, this rule applies when the plant is at two thirds of the desired height.
Growing cannabis without lighting isn’t possible. This also applies to small cannabis plants.
For you indoor cultivation you have various options when it comes to lighting, namely CFL (energy saving lamps), HPI, HPS, and LED lamps. By choosing the type of lamps you have to take into account the Watt power and the heat that comes from the lamps. You need around 400 watts per m2 and the growing space needs to remain a little cool.
HPI and HPS lamps are the most popular. They are cheap and produce 400 Watt without any problems. However, these lamps have a disadvantage. They produce a lot of heat. As a result, without proper ventilation your culture will become too hot. You also opt for LED. The lamps produce hardly any heat, but they are pretty expensive. It is therefore advisable to choose fluorescent tubes or CFL's. They produce little heat and are available in different colors. Do you opt for a limited Watt power? Then your plant has a less tendency to grow tall.
Air, ventilation and water supply
A small cannabis plant need air, ventilation and water to grow. The ventilation ensures air movement. As a result, CO2-rich air will quickly evaporate which will stimulate the photosynthesis process of your plant. In addition, ventilation ensures the application of cool air and the removal of warm which reduces the chance of dehydration.
Besides the air and ventilation, you must provide the plants with water. A plant in a small room need more water than plants in a regular crop. However, small cannabis plants often grow in width which makes proving water getting hard at some point. It’s therefore advisable to use a small water system. If there is enough space you can also choose to clear the sides next to the plant so that you can water the plants from the bottom.
Small spaces have led to innovative breeding methods. Think about:
- Topping, fimming and HST
- Scrog and LST
A small cannabis plant by topping, applying fimming or HST
During the growth phase you can top a cannabis plant by cutting off the top of the plant. With this you will stimulated the plant to develop new lateral branches which makes the plant grow mainly in width (bushy). If you remove two third of the top it’s called fimming. This method also results in a less high plant and more branching.
However, you can also cut a plant extremely. This is called HRT and stands for High Stress Method. With this technique, you break the stem of the main branch. The plant will think the stem is gone forever. However, the stem must not be completely broken off. As a result, the main branch can be repaired, but above all side branches are created which stimulate growth in the width.
A small cannabis plant using the Scrog method
Scrogging is a fairly simple method to determine the height of your plant and is often used for indoor growing in tents, greenhouses and boxes. With the Scrog setup you place gauze between the bottom and the light source. As soon as the branches grow through the mesh, you tie the branches to them. In this way the plant is forced to grow horizontally. In addition, all buds receive the same amount of light which will result in bigger buds.
LST is very similar to the Scrog method, but with this technique the higher branches are attached to the bottom. LST will force the plant develop double buds and lateral branches. This will result in a wider weed plant and higher returns.
Which cannabis seeds also produce small cannabis plants?
Do not you feel like having too much hassle and are you looking for ease of cultivation? Then it's recommended to choose a autoflower. An autoflower remains small (often even smaller than an Indica) regardless of the circumstances. In addition, autoflowers are crossed with a ruderalis plant which makes the plant independent of light schemes. Therefore they are very easy to grow.
