What do you need to plant germinated weed seeds in soil?

To plant your seeds into the soil you need the following attributes:

  • Lightproof pots with drainage
  • Moist airy potting soil
  • Pen
  • Tweezers
  • Germinated cannabis seeds

Step 1 – choose the right pot and fill it with potting soil

To choose the right pot for your grow it’s important to determine the preferred plant height before planting your seeds. Large plants won’t grow in small pots as small pot’s don’t provide enough space for root development. As a general rule every 5 liters is equal to 20 cm of plant-height. Although this rule doesn’t apply to all species, it’s a useful indication for the final plant height.

Not sure which pot to use? Check the table below!

What size pot for my weed plant?

Pot in litersPlant height
510 – 20
1020 – 40
1540 – 60
2060 – 80
2580 – 100
40100 – 120
Choose a light-proof pot with drainage

For a healthy growth, roots have to be prevented from drowning. It’s therefore extremely important to choose a pot with drainage. Drainage holes on the underside of the pot will make it possible for the water to escape.

Besides drainage, the growpot must be light-proof which will prevent the roots of contact with light.

Tip: Air-pots or smart-pots are a great choice. These pots provide the roots with extra oxygen which will stimulate a faster and stronger growth.

Fill the pots with moist potting soil

Have you chosen the desired pot? Then fill the pot ¾ with moist, loose and airy potting soil.

Step 2 – make a small dimple

Make a dimple in the potting soil. You do this simply by putting a pencil in the ground. The dimple needs to be about 0,5 – 1,5 cm deep.

Step 3 – place the cannabis seed in the dimple

To plant a seed the root from the seed must be at least 0.5 to 1.5 cm long. Use tweezers to put the seed in the dimple. The root sting (germinated root from the seed) should point downwards. Is the seed stuck to the moist paper towel? Don’t pull the seed but spray the seed with water again. You will see that the seed is now easily released.

The dimple must be 0.5 to 1.5 cm deep. Make sure the dimple does not get deeper than 1.5 cm and not shallower than 0.5 cm.

Step 4 – cover the ground

Once the weed seed is in place, gently cover it with soil. Enough to block the light, but not too much. Do not press the ground but cover the seed gently. The seedlings are ready to grow.

When will your seedlings start to grow?

Seedlings normally emerge 24 to 72 hours after planting. In rare cases it takes a little longer.
