What Are Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds?

Autoflowering cannabis seeds automatically switch from vegetative growth to flowering after about 3-4 weeks, regardless of light cycle. Unlike photoperiod-dependent plants that flower based on light duration signaling the end of summer, autoflowers transition as a result of internal genetics and age. Their automatic flowering behavior combined with short 8-10 week seed-to-harvest grow cycles is why they are referred to as "auto-flowering" varieties. Key advantages are not needing light schedule changes to flower and fitting multiple harvests per outdoor season.

The Benefits of Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

  1. Fast harvests - bud in as little as 8 weeks
  2. Because of their short lifespan, you can have multiple crops per season.
  3. Compact, stealthy plants
  4. Beginner-friendly and resilient to plant diseases grower mistakes
  5. They grow well both indoors and outdoors
  6. Lower odor while growing.
  7. No need to change light cycle.

Choosing the Right Autoflowering Seeds for Your Grow

Here are a few tips when it comes to choosing the right autoflower strain for your grow.

  • Consider the size you want your plants to be. Some autoflower strains are quite small and compact, while others can grow over 3 feet tall. Pick seeds based on the size constraints of your growing space.
  • Look at the expected yield per plant. Higher-yield seeds will produce more buds per plant, but sometimes at the expense of potency or flavor. Decide what's most important to you.
  • Choose marijuana seeds that are suited to your climate and weather. For example, if you live in a cold, damp climate, look for autos that have high mold resistance. If you live in hot and dry climates, then look for autos that can handle heat well.
  • Pick seeds with the effects and flavors you want. Sativa-dominant strains have more uplifting, energetic highs, while indica-dominant strains are good for full-body relaxation.
  • If you grow outdoors, look for pest- and mold-resistant strains. This will reduce the chances of losing plants to common outdoor issues.
  • For beginners, feminized seeds make things easier -  you don't have to worry about male plants pollinating your grow.

Quick Guide to Growing Autoflowering Seeds Indoors

Autoflowering strains automatically start flowering after a certain period of vegetative growth, regardless of the light cycle. This makes them ideal for indoor growing as they stay compact and you can harvest yearly.

Germination -  There are many different ways to germinate, but this is our favoritePre-soak your weed seeds in a cup/glass of clean water for 12-24 hours before planting. This softens the shell. Afterward, plant your seed in a 5-gallon container with some pre-mixed soil. We like Fox Farms Ocean Forrest.

Seedling stage - Once your seed has sprouted, move it under some LED grow lights (18 hours on, 6 hours off ). Your LED grow light should be around 2 feet from your seedling. If it's too close, your seedling will burn, if it's too far away, it will stretch and starve. Water your plant only when the top inch of soill is dry.

Vegetative stage - At this stage, your auto plant will grow stems/leaves rapidly. Give it 18-24 hours of light per day. Gradually increase nutrients. Ideal temperature for this stage is 75-80°F with around 6-70% humidity. Make sure there is good airflow. Try low-stress training by gently bending stems to encourage even more canopy growth and light exposure. Support with ties/stakes as needed.

Flowering stage - Your autoflower plant will begin flowering automatically around 2-4 weeks after your seed has sprouted. Switch to a flowering nutrient schedule higher in phosphorus and potassium. Stop any high-stress training a few weeks into the flowering stage to avoid shocking autoflowers. Your buds are ready to harvest when 90% of the trichomes turn cloudy.

Quick Guide to Growing Autoflowering Seeds Outdoors

Here are a few tips if you are growing your autos outdoors:

  1. Start your seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use seed starting mix and grow lights.
  2. Harden off seedlings for 7-10 days before transplanting outdoors by slowly exposing them to sun and wind.
  3. Prepare your outdoor growing area in advance. Choose a sunny spot with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil.
  4. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Space plants 18-24 inches apart for airflow.
  5. Only water plants when the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering as it encourages mold and fungus.
  6. Feed with a balanced liquid nutrient formula every 2-3 weeks during flowering stage.
  7. Install supports/cages for plant branches as they grow taller. Protect them from wind and rain if possible.
  8. Watch closely for signs of pests or nutrient deficiencies and address promptly.

Quick Guide to Harvesting, Drying, & Curing Autoflowers

Harvesting Autoflowers

  • Check trichomes regularly in the last 2 weeks, use magnifier. Harvest when 70-90% of trichomes are cloudy.
  • Harvest whole plants at once. Use pruners to cut at base of stems.
  • Harvest in the morning after any dew has evaporated to prevent mold.
  • Wet trim off large fan leaves, keep sugar leaves intact if possible.

Drying Autoflowers

  • Dry plants slowly over 14-21 days at 60-70°F and 45-55% relative humidity.
  • Hang whole plants or loosely trim buds and place on wire racks in a dark drying area.
  • Ensure adequate air circulation using fans. Never pack buds together tightly.
  • When stems snap rather than bend, buds are ready for curing.
  • To test dryness, seal a small bud in an airtight jar for a few hours. If moisture accumulates on the inside, it will continue drying.

Curing & Storage

  • Cure buds by sealing in airtight jars, open daily to ventilate. Repeat over 4-6 weeks until the buds reach the desired moisture level.
  • Store cured buds long-term in airtight jars out of light. Maintain cool, dark space for maximum potency and shelf life.

Common Problems and Solutions in Growing Autoflowering Seeds

Flowering Too Early

Autoflowering plants start flowering based on age rather than light cycle. If your autoflower begins flowering within 2-3 weeks from seed, it is likely due to stress. Common causes include improper pH, overfeeding nutrients, small containers, and excessive heat. To avoid early flowering, maintain pH between 6.0-7.0, use half-strength nutrients, plant in 3-5 gallon pots, and keep temperatures moderate.

Stunted Growth/Small Plants

Autoflowers reach a predetermined size if grown healthy. Small plants with few buds indicate suboptimal conditions. This is usually due to lack of light. Autoflowers need at least 18 hours daily under grow lights. Increase light intensity or move lights closer. Avoid excessive heat from lights. Ensure proper pH and nutrients to fuel growth. Use larger containers so roots have room to expand

Light Leaks

When it comes to maximizing your yields in a short amount of time, nothing quite compares to the efficiency and convenience of autoflowering seeds.

Autoflowers are sensitive to any light exposure during their dark period. If growing indoors, prevent light leaks or interruptions overnight to avoid stressing your plants. Make sure your grow area is completely dark for 6+ hours. Cover any LEDs, power lights, or outdoor light pollution. Invest in a good grow tent to help create ideal dark conditions.

Nutrient Deficiencies

If leaves show unusual spots, twisting, or discoloration, you are likely to have a nutrient deficiency. This means plants lack nitrogen, phosphorus, or other key elements, which stunts buds. Identify and correct deficiency based on symptoms. Supplement with calcium-magnesium if growing in coco coir. Ensure pH is in range so nutrients dissolve properly.

The Medicinal Uses of Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

Autoflowering cannabis strains can offer therapeutic effects similar to photoperiod cannabis. Research indicates efficacy in treating chronic painPTSDanxiety disorders, and more. As with any medicine, "start low and go slow", monitoring reactions closely. Key medical advantages of autos are fast access for symptom relief and versatile home cultivation enabling self-sufficiency.

Autoflowering cannabis seeds FAQs

Here are some answers to the questions we see most often:

How long will my autoflowering seeds last?

Properly stored autoflowering cannabis seeds can remain viable for 2-5 years or longer.

How should I store my autoflowering seeds?

To maintain viability, autoflowering cannabis seeds should be stored in a cool, dark place. An ideal storage temperature is under 70°F, and keeping seeds in an airtight container will prevent moisture loss. Refrigeration can help extend seed lifespan even further if sealed against condensation.

Are Autoflowering Seeds Feminized?

Yes, you can get autoflowering cannabis seeds that are feminized. All of the autoflower seeds we stock here at WeedSeedsExpress are feminized. Feminized seeds produce only female plants, which contain high levels of THC and other cannabinoids. Autoflowering seeds automatically start flowering after 3-4 weeks regardless of light cycle.

Are autoflowering seeds always female?

No, autoflower seeds are not guaranteed to be female. All of the Autoflower seeds we stock here at WeedSeedsExpress are feminized, which means that any risk of male plants is removed. That means all our growers have peace of mind knowing that all their autoflower plants will flower as productive, bud-producing females. This saves gardeners the hassle, wasted effort and reduced yields caused by unwanted male autos that don't generate any usable cannabis.

Are autoflowers less potent?

Autoflower potency used to lag behind photoperiod varieties, but breeding efforts have greatly closed the gap. When comparing autoflower and photoperiod versions of the same strain, autoflowers may still test slightly lower in THC due to their cannabis ruderalis heritage. However, many exceptionally potent autoflowering cannabis strains now exist that surpass some photoperiod varieties. It depends primarily on each strain's unique genetics. By carefully selecting THC-maximized autoflower seeds and consulting their lab test results, growers can easily find autoflower options with 20%+ THC that outclass other non-autoflowering marijuana strains in potency.

Can autoflowers produce seeds?

Yes, autoflower plants can produce seeds if they are pollinated. If you want to prevent seed production, always start with feminized autoflower seeds rather than regular autoflower seeds. Feminized autoflower seeds eliminate the possibility of male autoflower plants that could pollinate female autoflower plants. If you're growing with female-only autoflower plants, seed formation due to male pollination is impossible.

However, unintended stress can cause female autoflowers to become hermaphrodites and could still result in some seed production through self-pollination. But the risk is vastly reduced with the female-only genotype of feminized autoflower seeds. As long as you provide a low-stress environment for your all-female crop grown from top-shelf feminized autoflower seeds, they will reliably harvest seedless and top-quality buds.

Can autoflowers be grown outdoors?

Autoflowers are great for outdoor cultivation(even for beginners). Simply choose a mold-resistant auto strain suited for your climate, plant in full sun after your last spring frost in rich soil, then provide adequate watering through summer but avoid heavy overwatering. With proper preventative care taken against pests and mold, auto strains will transition themselves to flower and finish their life cycle, letting you harvest by late summer or early fall. Key outdoor advantages are their natural resilience, discrete size, and not requiring light cycle adjustments.

How do you water Autoflowering strains?

Use water with low mineral content for autoflowers - distilled, reverse osmosis or demineralized water is best. If using tap water, let it sit out 24 hours and check that the pH is between 6.3-6.8. Avoid highly alkaline/acidic water. Aim for moderate total dissolved solids (TDS) of 50-150ppm. Check the drainage water's TDS to ensure nutrients aren't building up too much.Be careful not to overwater, as this causes nutrient lockout and root rot. Let the soil dry out between waterings.

Can autoflowering seeds be grown indoors?

Yes, autoflower seeds can be grown indoors. In fact, many marijuana growers choose to cultivate autoflowers indoors because it allows full control over the plants' environment. Because autoflowers tend to be smaller, compact plants, they are well-suited for indoor grows where space might be limited.

Are autoflowering seeds smaller?

Autoflower seeds are not inherently smaller than regular or feminized cannabis seeds. Seed size is dependent on the specific strain, not the flowering type. Some autoflower strains may have smaller seeds, while others can be larger, just like photoperiod strains. Autoflower plants themselves tend to be smaller than those grown from regular or feminized seeds. This is because autoflowers have a predetermined life cycle that ends in flowering after a certain period of time, regardless of light exposure.

Can autoflowers be topped?

Yes, you can top autoflower plants. However, we advise waiting until you have some growing experience before trying this high-stress training technique. Topping autoflowers incorrectly can stunt them, resulting in a smaller yield. For beginner autoflower growers, it's generally best not to top on your first few grows. Once you have a solid understanding of the autoflower life cycle and how the plants grow, topping can be incorporated to control height and increase yields.

What Kind of Nutrients Do Autoflowering Varieties Need?

Autos generally have higher nutrient needs than photoperiod plants since they grow and flower so quickly.

Here are some of the key nutrients that autoflower strains require:

  • Nitrogen (N) - Supports healthy green growth and influences yield size. Deficiencies cause leaves to yellow.
  • Phosphorus (P) - Critical for root, flower, and bud development. Boost levels during flowering.
  • Potassium (K) - Important for overall plant health and resilience to mold and disease. Helps buds bulk up.
  • Calcium & Magnesium - Help regulate nutrient intake and support strong cell walls/stems.
  • Micronutrients - Iron, manganese, boron, zinc, copper etc. Aid photosynthesis, enzyme production, and other growth processes

Use an autoflower-specific nutrient line if possible. These are specially formulated for the faster growth rate and life cycle of autoflowers. Popular options include Advanced Nutrients and General Hydroponics Flora Series.

What is the Perfect Humidity and Temperature for Autos?

Temperature - Auto plants grow best with daytime temperatures of 70-85°F (21-29°C) and nighttime temps around 65-70°F (18-21°C). Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) or frequent temperature fluctuations.

Humidity - Ideal humidity levels are 40-50%. Lower humidity can cause buds to dry out, while higher humidity increases risks of mold, fungi, and pests. Use a humidifier or pebble tray to maintain a steady humidity at around 50%.
