Sour Diesel – Week by Week Grow Diary & Strain Review

Some grows follow the schedule. This one definitely didn't.

Gdogfunk's Sour Diesel spent far longer in veg than originally planned, mostly because space in the grow room wasn't available when the plant needed it. Transplants were delayed, the lighting setup caused trouble, and the plant had to sit in veg while the rest of the room caught up.

The interesting part was how well Sour Diesel kept moving through it all. She stayed healthy, handled repeated training, and kept filling out until there was finally enough room to move her into the final pot and prepare for flower.

Grow Setup

The final indoor setup used a ViparSpectra 3 x 3 tent, AC Infinity Cloudline Pro S6 extraction, and a 6-inch carbon filter.

Weeks 1 & 2 - A Stretchy Start

The seed cracked cleanly using the paper towel method and went into soil under a 48W fluorescent light with a seedling heat mat underneath.

Sour Diesel started stretching early. By the end of week one, the grower was already commenting on how much height she had put on.

Part of that became clear in week two. The timer had accidentally been running 24/0 for several days instead of the intended 18/6. The schedule was corrected, and the plant continued growing without any major issue reported.

Temperatures sat around 24 °C during these early stages, with RapidStart also being used.

Weeks 3 & 4 - First Topping, No Room to Move

By week three, the plant had reached a recorded height of [12.7:cm] and was growing strongly enough for the first topping.

The bigger issue was space.

The veg tent was full while other plants were still finishing in the flowering tents, which meant the planned transplant into a 1-gallon pot had to wait.

The plant stayed healthy while the grower worked around the lack of room.

Weeks 5 & 6 - Finally Into a Bigger Pot

Another week passed before Sour Diesel finally got some extra root space.

In week six she was transplanted into a 1-gallon fabric pot filled with reused Roots Organic soil and perlite. The grower amended the soil with worm castings, alfalfa meal, gypsum, blood meal, and kelp meal.

This was done because previous grows had shown early yellowing that the grower linked to depleted soil.

URB and MFP were also used during the transplant watering.

Weeks 7 & 8 - Training Starts Properly

With the transplant done, training became more involved.

Week seven brought LST along with a second round of topping. The plant continued growing well after both.

By week eight, Sour Diesel was under LED lighting, and the grower noted that she appeared to be enjoying it.

Growth stayed strong, but the next move was already obvious. She needed the 7-gallon pot.

That transplant would take longer than planned.

Weeks 9 & 10 - Feeding Picks Up

Sour Diesel continued filling out while the final transplant stayed on the to-do list.

By week ten, the feeding program had stepped up with Cali Pro Grow A, Cali Pro Grow B, and Emerald Goddess.

The plant remained healthy and continued putting on vegetative growth, but the 1-gallon pot was becoming increasingly limiting.

Weeks 11 & 12 - Veg Explodes

Week eleven stayed straightforward, with continued watering and feeding.

Then week twelve brought what the grower described as a huge veg explosion.

At that point, the move into the 7-gallon pot had become increasingly important. Sour Diesel was still growing strongly, but the final transplant was overdue.

Weeks 13 & 14 - The Smell Starts Early

By week thirteen, Sour Diesel was already producing noticeable aroma despite still being deep in veg.

The grower noted that rubbing the leaves was enough to leave his fingers smelling strongly.

Week fourteen brought another delay. Family commitments pushed harvesting and transplanting back, which meant Sour Diesel remained in the smaller setup for longer than planned.

She continued growing in the meantime.

Weeks 15 & 16 - More Waiting and a Lighting Problem

There was no week fifteen update.

By week sixteen, another issue had appeared. The driver controlling the white portion of the LED had failed, leaving the grower dealing with reduced lighting until a replacement driver could be arranged.

Despite the setback, the plant remained in veg and continued through the delay.

Weeks 17 & 18 - Into the 7-Gallon Pot

Week seventeen finally brought the move into the 7-gallon container.

A ScrOG screen was added, and LST continued as the plant was spread across the available space.

By week eighteen, the grower reported that Sour Diesel was responding well to the transplant.

The switch to flower was still being held back because the canopy had not yet filled the space as much as the grower wanted.

This had become a very long vegetative period.

Weeks 19 & 20 - One Last Push

By week nineteen, Sour Diesel was still a deep, healthy green.

There was a slight hint of overfeeding visible at the tips of some fan leaves, but no serious nutrient issue was reported.

The grower decided to give her one final week in veg.

At the end of week twenty, the decision was made to switch to flower.

Weeks 21 & 22 - The Flip

The light schedule dropped to 12/12 and Sour Diesel finally entered flowering.

There was one small feeding mistake in the opening week when the grower accidentally used the first-week flowering nutrient mix because this tent was running behind another crop.

No major problem followed.

By the end of flower week two, the plant was still looking lush and green, with none of the early yellowing the grower had seen in previous runs.

The amended reused soil appeared to be holding up well.

Weeks 23 & 24 - Buds Start Building

The third week of flower brought visible bud development.

The plant remained green, flowers were forming well, and the grower again pointed to the soil amendments as a likely reason the plant had avoided early yellowing.

By week four of flower, the canopy had become fairly crowded.

The grower noted that more defoliation could have been done earlier, but flower development continued without any major issue.

Weeks 25 & 26 - Ripening Kicks In

The buds continued developing through weeks five and six of flower.

The grower noted that the plant was looking good and smelling good as ripening progressed.

Mammoth P, Terpinator, and Bloombastic appeared in the later flowering feed program.

By the end of this stage, harvest was starting to look close.

Weeks 27 & 28 - The Final Fade

By flower week seven, Sour Diesel had started fading heavily.

Leaves were changing color and becoming rough around the edges, giving the plant the late-season look the grower compared to an outdoor crop nearing the end.

Feeding stopped and the plant went onto water only.

By week twenty-eight, harvest had arrived.

The plant was chopped and hung to dry for a little less than a week.

Detailed Observations & Grower Reflections

The biggest takeaway from this grow was how well Sour Diesel handled an uneven schedule. Delayed transplants, an accidental 24/0 light period, a failed LED driver, topping, LST, ScrOG, and a long veg period never turned into a serious plant problem.

The soil amendments also seemed to help. The grower had experienced early yellowing in previous runs, but this plant stayed green well into flower.

Looking back, the main thing gdogfunk said he would change was watering more often, as he felt better consistency may have reduced the crispy leaves seen toward the finish.

Sour Diesel: Final Result and Strain Review

Sour Diesel finished with [70.5:gr] of dry flower from one plant.

The grower rated the strain 10/10 and reported berries, citrus, and earthy notes in the finished buds. The effect was described as sleepy and "super stony."

A long run, but one that clearly finished on a high note.
