Cannabis seeds Canada: law and importing

Information

On 17 October 2018, Canada became one of the few countries in the world to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. It had been legal for medicinal use for some time already, but now you can also buy cannabis or cannabis oil for your general health, well-being and pleasure. Although Canadian cannabis-lovers were eager to grow their own weed, this has been virtually impossible until recently. Therefore this blog: cannabis seeds Canada!

With the legalization of cannabis, most states also allowed each household to grow up to four plants. However, this could only be done with seeds that were legally bought. The problem was that there were no suppliers of licensed cannabis seeds in het country. This was of course very frustrating until 2019 where the situation has improved a bit and the law on recreational cannabis use was changed. A few state governments, like the province of Newfoundland and Ontario, have now started to sell small quantities of weed seeds.

Now selling cannabis seeds in Canada is legal and also possible, although not for everyone in every state. You will read more about that below. Also, though buying marijuana seeds is legal in Canada, not every state has sufficient sales outlets or seeds in stock to meet the demand. If you don’t live near one, you can buy cannabis seeds online, although not all marijuana seed banks have a wide selection of high-quality seeds. Importing cannabis seeds into Canada does offer you these benefits. That is why we will discuss this option in the conclusion of this article. But let’s first have a closer look at the possibilities of growing cannabis plants per state.

Are marijuana seeds illegal in Canada?

The limited supply of cannabis seeds may make you wonder: Are weed seeds in Canada legal or not? The answer is not that straightforward. It depends on who you are and where you live. Although buying weed for recreational use has become legal, this only applies to people over the age of 18. In most states, this age is often actually 19. Generally, people can carry or posses up to 30 grams of cannabis. A seed could be counted as about a gram worth of marijuana. So although theoretically it is not illegal to posses a few weed seeds, not all states permit growing marijuana at home. The ones that do, generally allow the cultivation of only four plants per household.

Alberta is one of two states (the other is Quebec), where it is legal to use marijuana from the age of 18. There are private outlets that are allowed to sell it. Cannabis seeds are among the products that can be legally sold. Only the provincial government can sell cannabis online.

British Columbia

In this state you can use marijuana from the age of 19. You can possess a maximum of 1000 grams of cannabis per household but only 30 grams may be carried in public. There are both government-operated as well as privately owned stores, but they are still few. It is legal for them to sell cannabis seeds.

Manitoba

In Manitoba, you have to be at least 19 in order to use cannabis. You can possess a maximum of 30 grams in public. There are a number of retail stores that sell cannabis, and the state sells it online. However, growing your own cannabis seeds is not legal in Manitoba.

New Brunswick

New Brunswick allows people from the ages of 19 and up to buy and use cannabis. Growing a maximum of four plants at home is legal and there is no limit to the amount of cannabis you can possess in your house. You can however only carry a maximum of 30 grams outside of your home. The government has several retail stores and sells cannabis online, but apparently it has been difficult to have enough cannabis in stock to meet the demand.

Newfoundland and Labrador

In Newfoundland and Labrador it is legal to grow a maximum of four plants at home. There are a number of retail stores that sell cannabis, but you have to be at least 19 years old to be able to buy or grow it.

Nova Scotia

A number of Nova Scotia liquor stores are selling cannabis. You can also buy it online through the NSLC if you are 19 or older. The stores did have problems with their stocks in early 2019. You may possess a maximum of 30 grams and it is allowed to grow a maximum of four cannabis plants per household.

Ontario

Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) sells cannabis online through the Ontario Cannabis Store. Private cannabis stores will open later in 2019. You have to be 19 or older to buy marijuana there, and it is legal to carry a maximum of 30 grams. It is allowed to grow your own plants, but no more than four.

Prince Edward Island

In this state, you can use or posses cannabis from the age of 19 and up. The Prince Edward Island Cannabis Management Corporation is the only local organization where you can legally buy marijuana, either online or in a number of retail stores. Some also sell cannabis seeds and seedlings. You can grow up a maximum of four plants. Although you can only carry 30 grams in public, you can have an unlimited amount at home. You do have to keep it in a place where kids younger than 19 cannot access it.

Quebec

In Quebec you have to be 21 or older to buy cannabis. This can only be done legally at one of the Société québécoise du cannabis stores. You can purchase or possess no more than 30 grams at once, but it is allowed to have a maximum of 150 grams in your home. Growing your own plants is not legal in Quebec.

Saskatchewan

In this state, the minimum age to buy cannabis is 19. It is legal to carry a maximum of 30 grams outside of your home. Marijuana can be bought from a small number of privately owned stores that are licensed by the province, or through the provincial website.
