Photoperiod Seeds

What Are Photoperiod Seeds?

Photoperiod cannabis seeds are the gold standard for growers who want full control from start to finish. These aren’t the plug-and-play kind of seeds that flower on their own. Instead, they wait for you to flip the switch. Quite literally.

These plants rely on the light cycle to know when to start flowering. Keep them under 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness, and they’ll stay in veg, stacking leaves and roots. Flip them to 12 hours of light and 12 of darkness, and that’s the cue to bloom. That ability to control when your plants flower is exactly why photoperiod strains are still the top choice for indoor growers, outdoor cultivators with long seasons, and anyone who wants to train, top, and fine-tune their crop.

They take a little more patience than autos, sure. But in return, you get bigger yields, stronger aromas, deeper effects, and a wider toolkit of techniques to boost your results. If you want to shape your grow rather than sit back and watch, this is the kind of seed you want in your soil.

At WeedSeedsExpress, we stock a huge variety of photoperiod seeds. That includes legendary strains like Northern Lights and AK-47, flavour bombs like Banana Kush and Amnesia Haze, and breeder-ready regular seeds for those who like to experiment. Every pack comes from trusted genetics, tested for quality, and backed by our germination guarantee.

Why Grow Photoperiod Strains?

Photoperiod seeds give you the most important thing in cannabis growing: control. Unlike autoflowers that start blooming on their own schedule, photoperiod plants wait for the light change. This gives you complete freedom over how long you let them veg.

Want a small, discreet indoor plant? Veg it for a few weeks. Want a beast that fills a tent or dominates your back garden? Let it veg longer. More time in veg means more branches, more bud sites, and a much heavier final harvest.

They’re also ideal for training techniques. You can top them to promote multiple colas, use LST to shape them horizontally, or run a full SCROG setup for maximum efficiency. You simply don’t get that level of control with autos because their life cycle is fixed and fast.

And here’s the real kicker. With more time to grow, photoperiod strains often develop more complex terpene profiles and higher cannabinoid concentrations. This is why you’ll often find connoisseur growers leaning toward photos. If you’re chasing flavour, potency, or just want to push a plant to its full potential, photoperiod genetics are the way to get there.

Types of Photoperiod Seeds at WeedSeedsExpress

There are two main types of photoperiod seeds in our shop, and both serve different needs depending on your goals.

feminised Photoperiod Seeds

These are the go-to option for most growers. feminised seeds are bred to produce only female plants, which are the ones that grow buds. That means you don’t have to deal with removing males or worrying about accidental pollination. You get 100 percent usable plants.

Perfect for indoor setups, outdoor runs, and growers who want the most efficient use of space and time. You’ll find legendary photoperiod feminised strains in our catalogue, like Banana Kush, White Widow, Northern Lights, and Amnesia Haze.

Regular Photoperiod Seeds

Regular seeds are for breeders, purists, and growers who want full genetic diversity. These will give you both male and female plants, so they’re ideal if you’re making your own crosses or selecting phenotypes. They’re also the best option for cloning and maintaining your own unique line. A little more effort, but worth it if you’re in it for the long haul.

Growing Tips for Photoperiod Strains

Photoperiod strains might need a bit more attention than autos, but once you’ve got the rhythm down, they’re incredibly rewarding. Think of them like a high-performance machine: give them the right fuel, light, and training, and they’ll absolutely deliver.

1. Nail the Light Schedule: Keep them on 18/6 during veg, then flip to 12/12 to trigger flowering. Indoor growers can use timers. Outdoor plants flower naturally when the days shorten.
2. Veg As Long As You Like: Short veg for smaller plants, long veg for heavy yields. The bigger the plant, the more resources it’ll need later.
3. Use Training Techniques: Topping, LST, and SCROG work best with photoperiods. Autos usually move too fast for these methods.
4. Watch the Clock on Flowering: Most photos need 8 to 11 weeks to flower. Sativas take longer, indicas finish quicker. Monitor trichomes for harvest timing.
5. Match Your Strain to Your Space: Some strains stretch hard when flowering. Pick shorter hybrids or plan for training if space is limited.
6. Don't Rush the Veg: Give your plant at least 4–6 weeks in veg for stronger structure and better yields. A little patience makes a big difference.
